Lambeth wedding cake, Spain Gibraltar

This cake was designed for a bride that wanted a traditional lambeth wedding cake with sugar roses and blossoms.  In this bride's culture, swans are important and are a decorative must as they are symbol of family life and the permanence of the bond of marriage, so we ensured that two sugar swans were placed on the cake above the couple's monogram.

We have already blogged the wedding cake as we asked the lovely Mireia Cordomi to take some photos of it for our portfolio.  However we were over the moon when we found out who the wedding photographer was, and his photos were such a delight to see.

Floral monogram cascade cake, Spain Gibraltar

I loved this wedding cake.  This bride loved the floral cascade cake, but wanted to incorporate their wedding monogram.  So we decided to split the cascade and have it flowing around the back of the cake to the other side.  Swarovski crystals were also placed around the cake to add to the bling factor.

Lemon & Grey wedding cake Spain Gibraltar

This wedding was beautifully styled and planned by Reviva weddings.  The bride's colour pallette was a zesty lemon, grey and petrol blue, and was reflected in the stationery that the bride herself designed and created.

The cake reflected the bride's wedding dress which had contemporary pleating and jewelled detailing.  I just love the coconut shy that Reviva Weddings created!

Lace cupcakes, cake and cakepops, Spain Gibraltar

This wedding was one of the last weddings in 2012, which featured cool water roses and lace, two of my favourite things.  It is always a pleasure to provide cakes for Rachel Rose weddings, as Rachel herself is dedicated to the styling of the venue, and never forget the cake table.  Imagine my excitement to find a new reclaimed cake table and a large bird cage alongwith a old fashioned dining tray, all for the cake, cakepops and cupcake display!  The result was amazing.

Thank you to Janne, who worked her floral magic on the fresh flowers, and as always thank you to Anna for allowing me to share her beautiful images.

Guest Post: A coffee break with... Nulki Nulks

Nulki Nulks Stationery's aim is to provide stationery that is special to each of their clients. They take great pleasure in not just providing wedding stationery, but in providing an enjoyable experience that results in stationery that reflects your personality and theme.

How did you end up in your profession?
A little by chance and destiny! I started out life as a professional dancer, but I always had an interest in design. A dancers performing life is quite short but I am fortunate enough to have found a new way to share and be creative!

I stumbled across my love for graphic design, when as a poor dancer starting out in life I needed a promotional card and decided to do it myself. That led onto all sorts of things for friends and family, but by far the best request was from a friend asking if I could design her wedding invitations! I felt so honoured that she wanted me to do this for her and that’s when the first ever wedding invitation was made!

What is the best part of your job as a stationery designer?
Happy People! Sometimes it’s instantaneous and at time it takes a little longer; but at the end get to create, share and contribute a little to a happy time in people lives!

Who, what inspires you?
Wow, that’s a difficult question.  For me, inspiration is everywhere and I never know what or who will inspire me next. It can be a random comment that inspires or changes the path of a piece of work. But so as not to totally avoid the question, I definitely look at wedding styling, interiors, fashion and of course my clients, for inspiration.

What’s next for Nulki Nulks?
Well we are still in our infancy and as any infant we (my husband and I) are planning to continuing growing, learning and working towards improving our designs, brand and service.

What do you love about brides?
I love how excited they can be in our shared interest for paper goods, simple!

What is one of your Stationery Do’s?
Have what you like it’s your day!

 …. And  a Stationery Don't?
I love detail, but with stationery it is important not to overdo it. Sometimes less is more!

Finally, please tell us one secret that is key to the perfect stationery…….
It’s nice to follow fashion and take inspiration from the latest trend, but it doesn’t mean it’s always right and suited to the client. My secret to perfect stationery is have what you want, not what you think you should have, this way it will be perfect!

Cool Water Rose wedding cake, Spain Gibraltar

I always love meeting with couples and discussing their designs.  I was fortunate to meet this bride several times and meet not only the groom but the mother of the bride too!  After their tastings, they decided on fruit, lemon, raspberry and chocolate biscuit cake.

The design came from the bride's heavily jewelled wedding dress.  When I examined it there was one aspect that I focused on which was the scallopped detailing which I replicated onto the cake.  To add texture the detailing was then handpainted.

Guest Post: A coffee break with Niki Lawerence, Wedding Makeup

Marbella Makeup , Niki Lawrence, has been working as a professional makeup artist for the past ten years.  Niki trained for 3 years at the prestigious London College of Fashion.  She previously worked as a resident trainer for MAC cosmetics and other brands such as Laura Mercier and Daniel Sandler.  Since becoming freelance, Niki has worked behind the scenes at a host of fashion shows including the London and Milan fashion weeks.

How did you end up in your profession?

I have always been passionate about make-up.  The gorgeous colours, textures and wonderful packaging caught my attention at a young age and being able to create different looks is highly rewarding.  I have a passion for art and design which led me to study an art foundation course followed by a BA (hons) in make-up and hair for the performing arts.

What is the best part of your job as a makeup artist?

I find that every day is completely different in my job this definitely keeps me motivated. I am very lucky to do a job that I enjoy every aspect of so much.

At this moment what is your favourite item in your makeup bag?

My favourite item is MAC eye paint it is the best eye base I have found, it will keep your eye make-up in place and creaseless all day.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from everything around me.  I have also always been inspired by various artists especially Matisse.  Pinterest is great for finding, storing and sharing all of your inspirations.

What do you love about brides?

For me it is rewarding to be chosen to be a part of a bride’s special day.  I love how some brides are so unbelievably organised years in advance and others contact me a few weeks prior to the day this always happens and always amazes me!

What is one of your Bridal Do’s?

Do have a bridesmaid carry a little bag containing a DIY kit of tissues, powder and lipstick for touch ups on the wedding day.

…. And  a Bridal Don't’s?

I wouldn’t recommend trying to follow specific bridal trends in hair and make-up.  Opt to keep your look classic and timeless and most importantly feel comfortable and like you!

Finally, please tell us one makeup secret…….

Invest in a good set of quality make-up brushes.  These will do the majority of the work for you when it comes to the application and perfect finish of any make-up look.

Guest Post: A coffee break with Reviva Weddings

Reviva Weddings
was established in 2007, by Laura Charles, and has earnt the reputation as one of the top wedding planners and designers in Spain and Europe.

Reviva´s talented and professional team combine their flair for designing and styling events with effortless organisational skills to create beautiful, elegant celebrations that truly reflect each couple

How did you end up in your profession?
I started my career 30 years ago in the display and design profession, studying for a Display Design Diploma at St Martins in London.

My work history had involved travelling all over the world and covered many aspects of design and styling from creating window displays to dressing large corporate events in London and the UK.  When I settled down to have my daughters, I retrained as an interior designer to add more skills to my portfolio, studying the History of Art, Historic Paint Effects and the Design of 3d spaces, I achieved an NVQ in Interior Design.

When I moved to Spain, I could see a huge gap in the events industry, in particular weddings,  There was a market to offer stylish decorations, props and acessories to style events as there was really nothing here.  In those days you could not even find someone who hired nice chair covers and sashes, so Reviva Weddings was started and we have not looked back!

What is the best part of your job as a wedding stylist?

There are so many best parts!  I absolutely love design weddings, they are all so different and each one reflects the couples individuality, style and tastes.  I think however, the best part is seeing it all come together on the day and the delight in our couples faces as they finally see their vision of their dream day come together.

Who, what inspires you?

The designers and stylists in the US are a hugh source of inspiration for me, they just love decoration and really do it so well.  The resources that they have are second to none, which does make me slightly jealous.

I do enjoy putting that slight Spanish twist on our designs and I am thrilled with our 2012 weddings we created using Spanish elements, such as our Hacienda Oranges, our fabulous Sevillian Spanish Bull theme, our Flamenco inspired touches and I do love our Moroccan styling with the use of colours.

What's next for Reviva Weddings?

Since adding the Planning and Coordination arm to Reviva we have gone from strength to strength on this part of our business which I am thrilled with.

Having spent the last two years developing and concentrating on the planning, I am now refocusing on our initial decoration business to bring in new products and up our level with some real wow factor designs and decorations.

You cannot stay the same within the decoration industry as trends are continuously changings and styles are copied so they become old, tried and tested.  So onwards and upwards with new fresh ideas coming for 2013!

What do you love about brides?

I love the excitement of our brides.  They are so different, some plan their weddings with military precision and others are so laid back, but they are all hugely excited about their big day and it is very infectious.  It does make our work, happy work :)

What is one of your Bridal Do’s?

I think one of the key things when planning your wedding is do try to keep to your dream day vision.  It is too easy to be bombarded with so many ideas, designs and colours and get easily sidetracked resulting in a complete mess of ideas jumbled together.  Creating an inspiration board at the beginning is always a good idea, either just a file of your favourite photos, ideas, etc or a wedding style board on Pinterest.  When you feel yourself running away with ideas focus back to your boards to remember what your style is and what you really want to achieve on your day.

…. And  a Bridal Don't?

Don't overspend, it is too easy to get carried away and adding on all the tiny must haves can soon add up to a small fortune.  Be clear and focused on what you actually need and want for your wedding day.  Make lists of all the important things, if there is money left over then add the not so important things.  If you feel you are out of control, always consult with your planner or designer, we are experts in creating perfect wedding days and can soon advise you on how best to achieve the maximum and what you can afford to lose.

Finally, please tell us one secret that is key to the perfect wedding…….

A relaxed and happy bride and groom!

Guest Post: A coffee break with... Virginia Florista

Virginia Florista  is based in Marbella and supplies flowers and decorations to some of the most prestigious events on the Costa.  Virginia Gonzalez, Creative Director, spoke with us today about her company.

How did you end up in your profession?

I come from a long line of florists and fell in love with flowers from a very young age. My parents own Ronda’s largest Florists called La Rosa so I was brought up from a young age helping them with all the local events and wedding.

What is the best part of your job as a florist?

The fact that every day is different and I get to be creative and try new things every time. Whether it is flowers for a hotel lobby, a huge star studded event or a romantic Vintage wedding I meet fantastic people and get to create works of art that make everyone smile.

Who, what inspires you?

All sorts of things inspire me, they vary from day to day – it could be a great song on the radio or a beautiful picture in a magazine. More than anything I am inspired by nature itself, Mother Nature is the most creative woman of all.

What’s next for Virginia Florista?

Well we are growing our wedding business and have lots of fun themed events planned for next year, plus we are branching out more into decorations and props. Plus in the future we would love to have our own shop with offices too so that we can really showcase our work and have more clients come and meet with us.

What do you love about brides?

The best thing about working with brides is that their enthusiasm and excitement is really contagious. It is a pleasure to sit with a bride-to-be planning her colour theme and sharing ideas, then to see her on her big day so happy because her dream has all come together.

What is one of your Bridal Do’s?

Be Flexible!

When it comes to flowers it is always best to have an idea on a colour, theme or perhaps a specific flower then let the experts suggest how to turn it all into your perfect floral decoration. Always bear in mind that seasonality, venue, availability and weather conditions can all affect your choices – especially when marrying abroad!

…. And  a Bridal Don't?
Panic!
No matter how long a bride has to plan her big day the two week countdown is always fraught. Stay focused and keep things in perspective. Your guests will be looking at you all day and not that the shade of pink roses on the table centres won’t be the same as the bridesmaid’s sashes. The day goes by so quickly so relax and enjoy it.

Finally, please tell us one secret that is key to the perfect wedding flowers….

Work with the best. Not just the best florist but the best everyone…
You spend so long planning and thinking about your day you can’t afford to leave anything to chance, so choose a reputable florist that comes well recommended and that you can trust to deliver on the day. A good florist will only work with the freshest flowers, will have discussed client’s expectations well in advance, will have shown them samples and on the day will be available until the very last minute. The secret to a perfect wedding is a calm bride

Brooch Wedding Cake, Gibraltar Spain

It was so lovely to meet with this couple.  When discussing designs, we decided to highlight the design of the brides dress, which had beautiful jewelled blossoms cascading down.  The bride also loved a bit of bling, so we decided to add sparkle to the dress by a creating a brooch topper.  The brooch topper was creating using vintage pieces and also some new pieces too.  Thank you to Jenni for these photographs.

Vintage Lace and Pearl Wedding cake, Spain Gibraltar

One recurring theme this year has been that of using lace and pearls.  Spain is a country famous for its lace and I love sourcing unique cuts of lace in my spare time.  This bride also spoke of her love of lace and originally we agreed to use lace from her wedding dress on the cake.  However, after discussing it we agreed to use local Spanish lace on the top and bottom tier, replicating her lace with piping on the middle tier.  I just loved this wedding from the suitcase table plan to the brooch bouquet, true vintage at it's best!  Please enjoy a few photographs of the day sent to me by Ana Lui. x

Guest Post: a coffee break with... Fiesta Sol

Fiesta Sol  is a wedding planning and catering company dedicated to organising events and weddings in Marbella, Mijas and all along the Costa del Sol and Andalucia. Heather Sadtler, Head of Coordination spoke with us about her company and her tips for her brides.

How did you end up in your profession?
I originally trained as a journalist and worked for Conde Nast Publishers in London. I ended up arranging a lot of the parties & conferences for the magazine I worked for, and found I preferred event planning to writing!

What is the best part of your job as a wedding planner?
I think it is a real privilege being trusted to help organise such an important day in people´s lives. My favourite part of the job is seeing how people interact on the wedding day and we often end up feeling a part of the families! One of the best moments is seeing the father of the bride´s face when he sees his daughter in her wedding dress for the first time.

Who, what inspires you?
I am inspired by professionalism and values, and I admire wedding professionals who are supportive of each other and focus on the clients´needs above all else.

What’s next for Fiesta Sol?

Fiestasol continues to grow considerably each year. We are taking on more staff, investing in more amazing lighting and design stock and discovering new and exciting venues all along the Coast.

What do you love about brides?

I love the fact that they often end up becoming friends, and there is nothing better than a Fiestasol baby!

What is one of your Bridal Do’s?

It is so important to relax on your wedding day, you have done all the hard work, and it´s time to watch it all materialise.

…. and  a Bridal Don't?

Dont´sweat over the small stuff!

Finally, please tell us one secret that is key to the perfect wedding…….

The couple should always trust the professionals they have hired to make their day run smoothly. We are there to keep things running smoothly and if a couple are relaxed, everyone else at the wedding will pick up on this and enjoy themselves even more!

Retro Wedding Cake, Spain Gibraltar

When designing wedding cakes, I like to start from scratch to ensure that the wedding cake is unique to that bride and groom.  However, like most cake artists there are a few cake designs that I have on my cake 'bucket list' to do.  This cake was one of them!  When I met with this couple, they were amazing to deal with from the outset.  The bride wanted a cake inspired by the famous Choccywhoocydoodah (Love is all you need cake), however, as she was having her wedding abroad she was slightly disheartened that she would not be able to have it.  Little did she know, but I have always been in awe of Choocywhoocydoodah and their designs.  The design that she showed me was one of the designs on my 'bucket list'.  With great excitement we discussed the cake and the flavours and I decided to be true to the original design and do the cake completely out of white chocolate, modelling and cutting each of the accents by hand for the cake.  As there was so many elements to the cake, I finished the majority on the cake onset, with some of the work being captured by the marvellous photographer Jeremy Standley .  I admit that I did try to escape the camera lens, but Jeremy managed to capture me when I was unaware.  I know you will love these photos as much as I have. Enjoy!

Vintage wedding Spain, Gibraltar

I thoroughly enjoyed every part of designing this wedding.  The bride was a design dream to deal with and wanted a cake to be inspired by her beautiful stationery which she created.  After liaising online for numerous weeks, we decided to use ivory, pale gold and duck egg blue as the colour for sugar roses.  The bride also liked the idea of edible gold leaf on her cake, so to give the cake an 'antique' feel, delicate gold leaf was placed on the cake. It was a true honour to be a part of her day.

Children's candy & cupcake bars

Often at weddings it can be hard to keep children entertained throughout the evening.  So, why not have a candy and cupcake bar dedicated just for them?  At Sweet Things we believe that it is important to included all your guests in your wedding day, and this is certainly something that will make your little guests feel very important!

There are many options to choose from, from personalised chocolate bars and candy apples to cakes and cake pops.  The design can be bright cheerful colours, or they can be colours that complement your wedding day.  Things such as colouring books and games can also be provided.

This bride was amazing to work with, I fell in love with her and her mum!  We met several times and at times we chatted about everything else except the wedding cake!  The cake was inspired by the brides lace applique wedding dress and a cake from Peggy Porschen.  It was such a pleasure to work this this bride, and I was so greatful to be a part of her special day!  Thank you to David Toms for the use of his wonderful images!

Red Wedding Cake, Gibraltar Spain

This red and black wedding was beautifully decorated and styled, and really grasped the essence of a Spanish inspired wedding.  I was in love with the brides Jenny Packham wedding dress and when designing their topper cake, I designed several inspired by the wedding dress, but the groom chose my mini floral cascade cake, which looked fabulous in the pictures below.  For this wedding I was commissioned to do the cake, cupcakes and also macarons which were the couples favourite dessert.  I always get excited when I receive photographers photos as it is such a delight to see the whole day come together and such an honour to be a part of the couple's special day!

Mexican wedding Spain, Gibraltar

Right from the start this bride and groom were a breath of fresh air!  Their wedding had a Mexican theme as a nod to the groom's Mexican heritage.  The couple wanted their cake to feature the flowers from the wedding along with papel picados.  So after sitting down with the bride and groom, we decided to create sugar gerbera and sugar papel picados.

I just love the result!

Jewel wedding cake Spain, Gibraltar

When meeting this bride it became apparent from the outset that she had very contemporary ideas.  We decided to keep the wedding cake neutral colours and let the fresh floral topper do the talking.  However, after the bride has seen another one of our cakes with jewel detailing, she asked whether her design could be a little more tailored.  I love when brides allow me to create something unique for them.  So after several sketches, and using her dress as inspiration the below wedding cake was designed.  The brooch detailing was inspired by her wedding dress along with the lace of her veil.

Thank you to Jeremy for allowing me to share these photos.

Vintage style wedding cake, Spain, Gibraltar

It is always a pleasure to have very design-focused brides, and to be honest, most if not all of my brides are very design focused.  They love the idea that all their ideas and inspirations are taken into account when designing their wedding cake.  This bride did not want a white or ivory cake, and looked at other tones including champagne.  After looking at the tones of her floral decoration and discussing shades with her wedding designer , I decided that a tone of blush nude would work seamlessly.  The bride also asked for each tier to be different, and have oversized pearl piping.  Instead of choosing the popular stacked wedding cake, she also requested a pillar wedding cake.  The result was beautiful and worked in harmony with the rest of the vintage styling of the wedding.

Here is what the bride wrote a few days later!

Hi Fiona,

[Edited to say: We both] just wanted to extend our thanks for the beautiful cake you made for us.  It was more gorgeous than I had even imagined! The decor was absolutely stunning, and the flowers you added provided such a lovely touch. The cake was not only breathtaking to look at, but it tasted fabulous too! Everyone just loved it!

Thank you for helping to make our day so special!

Wedding Cake Spain Gibraltar

I am very behind on updating the blog, but I have some beautiful images from some amazing weddings to share with you.  I am very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with some incredible talented people across the Costa that have created beautiful weddings which I cannot wait to post!

The first wedding is an eco-chic wedding with bright orange and aqua tones.  After having a design session with the bride and groom it became apparent that oranges would be planning a key role in the wedding day.  So the couple bravely decided to go with my idea and think outside of the box.  I designed a cake that would incorporate the lace of the bride's veil with the oranges of the decor.  I envisaged that the oranges would look as if they had just been picked off a tree in an Andalucian orange grove.  The oranges were made from white chocolate and marshallows and chocolate chips, and the leaves and blossoms from sugar.

Thank you to Jeremy for some fantastic images, for more pictures go to Jeremy's website http://jeremystandley.com/teresa-todd-hacienda-san-jose-wedding/, but for now... here are some of my favourites!

Recently we were commissioned to provide a dessert table for a beautiful vintage style wedding in Rhonda.  The brief given was ruffles, vintage and pastel pink. One exciting 2012 trend is Ombré, using subtle shading and tones.  Keeping in line with this and combining our skills with Viriginia Florista we created this showstopping ombré dessert table.  Hard work certainly pays off!

The cake flavours were carrot and white chocolate, lemon and champagne, and chocolate biscuit cake.

Wedding Cake Spain, Gibraltar

As I have been so busy designing and sketching 2012, 2013 AND 2014 wedding cake designs I have neglected my blog.

We are delighted to share with you some images from 2011 that we recently received from David Toms.

White wedding cake, Spain, Gibraltar

This was one of the highlights for us!  A beautiful white wedding cake with accents of blue detailing (a nod to the 'something blue') with blue sugar hydrangeas and white sugar orchids.

The brides bouquet was a contemporary wired bouquet which inspired the sugar spirals down the side of the tiers of the cakes.  The lace details was replicated from swatches of the bridal lace pattern.

All seven tiers consisted of Jamaican black cake, decadent chocolate cake, lemon and lemon curd and raspberry ripple.

The cake was definitely a show stopping piece, one we were very proud to design and create.

Grooms Cakes, Gibraltar Spain

One trend that is becoming increasingly popular is that of Grooms Cake. We have briefly mentioned the history of the grooms cake in the past, but thought that we would give a little more insight into this fun concept.

Contrary to belief's this tradition did not originate in South of America, but actually dated back to Queen Victoria's reign.  At weddings, not only was there a wedding cake, but also a brides cake and a grooms cake. When the wedding ended, the additional cakes were sliced and served as gifts to the wedding party, in particular the groomsmen and bridesmaids  In later times in England, the tradition ran its course, but was thankfully maintained in the States.

However, as years have went by more and more brides seem to be rekindling their love with this tradition.  One couple that did this was the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.  Prince William has a love of chocolate biscuit cake, and had a three tiered chocolate cake with chocolate waterlilies and feathers.

Many modern brides find the concept of a grooms cake to be appealing as it is a way to include the groom on the wedding day.

Traditionally, the grooms cake is served on a seperate table, allowing the wedding cake to take center stage.  Also, in keeping with tradition, it is not served at the wedding reception, rather individual slices were boxed and given to guests as a token gesture of gratitude.  There is a myth thatan unmarried woman sleeps with a slice of the groom's cake under her pillow, she will dream of her future husband

However, many couple choose to break this tradition and serve the groom's cake to all their guests after the wedding cake is served.

The question now is.... what type of cake constitutes as a grooms cake.  Nowadays many brides seek the novel approach, and together, we design a cake that represents the interests of the groom.  This can be anything from baseball, guitars, pets, football/soccer teams to 3d cars.  There is no limit to what can be created!

Guest Post

Fi invited me to write a guest post for her blog about 2 months ago and I was delighted to accept.  What I did not realise is how easy it is to write on my own blog,  but how difficult it was to create a post for someone else´s blog.

Being a perfectionist, I have discarded board after board as something was not just hitting the right spot.

I had considered glitter as we were approaching our festive season, but it did not seem relevant to Fi´s amazing creations, although secretly I know she has hoards of edible glitter hiding from me!

I have spent hours on pinterest and google trying to find inspirations!  (This of course is normal for me!)

Finally, as always, the penny drops and having gone back to Fi´s website tonight, I found one of my favourite cakes of the year designed by Fi.  It was a beautiful vintage jewelled cake  photographed by Jeremy and featured on Fi´s website.

I do have to admit it is hard to choose a favourite from Fi´s fabulous collection but this cake ranked in my top three of 2011, so I decided to create an inspiration board around this beautiful vintage jewel cake creation.

To my delight our inspiration board is slightly bordering on glittery as we approach the festive season as who does not love a bit of sparkle for a special occasion.

Thank you Fi for inviting me to guest blog.

PS I eat Fi's cakes and they are to die for!  I have been known to accidently eat the client's samples but have learnt the hard way!

Wedding Cake Gibraltar Spain

We are thrilled to be featured in Confeti Magazine!

This cake is one of our favourites for 2011, it was fantastic that the bride & groom trusted us to create a unique centerpiece for her wedding.  The result was fantastic!  Thank you once again to Jeremy for the fabulous photographs!

Wedding Cakes Spain/Gibraltar

You may remember earlier in the year we posted photographs from a photoshoot in June which were taken by the talented Mireia Cordomi and style by Cucodesign.

Imagine our excitement to discover the photographs had been featured in the Spanish Magazine Tendencias de Bodas.

Here are the beautiful images once again for you to look at! Enjoy!x

Wedding Spain, Gibraltar

It is always a thrill when a bride is willing to put all their trust in your design.   This bride wanted something inspired by the couture designer Chanel.   Usually when cakes are 'Chanel inspired', they imitate the embossing of Chanel handbags.   We decided to step out of the box, and look at the Chanel concept.   For us, the concept is luxury style and utter decadence.   Combining these elements along with the colours (Black, white and Chanel pink) and pearl's we used various techniques to create a different approach.   We were thrilled with the result, an absolute show piece.   We also received a lovely testimonial from the bride and thought that we would share a bit with you.

'Thank you for all your hard work and creativeness throughout the design process with our cake.  From start to finish you felt my idea and style and made it a reality.  The cake could not have been more what i dreamed it was truly amazing.  I have just had my photo slideshow back and the cake makes such a statement, i love it!
Thank you again for your patience, I wish u so much success for the future u really deserve it , ur works just magnificant!!'

Below are Jeremy Standley's photographs which we are in love with.   Jeremy always seems to be able to capture our cakes as timeless images.  As ever, we are so grateful for these, thank you!

Cake Marbella, Spain, Gibraltar

Boys Toys

Below are two cakes that we recently provided to two clients.

The first, was designed for the client's boyfriend.  Display on the cake are the boyfriend's favourite things, his mountain bike, his VW Golf and his camera!  Yet, again, everything is edible (except the spokes on the mountain bike).

The second was for a client's father, who love of fishing and boats was to be reflected on the cake. On this cake, everything except the fishing pole is edible. We only had 8 hours to make and decorate this cake, otherwise, the pole would have been made from sugar as well.  Timing considered... we are thrilled with the results!  Proof we work hard under pressure!

Wedding Cake Gibraltar. Spain

This romantic wedding cake, was designed for a bride that loved cameos, pearls and ribbons.  The cake was to cater for her and her fiance, as they were eloping to Gibraltar!

We couldn't resist being part of such a romantic occasion, and fell in love with the end result!  The flavours were raspberry ripple and white chocolate.

Cake Marbella, Spain, Gibraltar

Whilst I am at my happiest design wedding cakes and other cakes that are full of romance, we often get asked for more novel celebration cakes.  I noticed that we haven't been putting these on our blog, so please enjoy, and yet! everything is edible!

We love to create edible art and are inspired by anything that is part of your wedding day.  The below cake was inspired by the Spanish tablewear.  We replicated the pattern and created a dramatic Spanish mosaic, adorned with sugar flowers.

Guest Post

Hi Fi readers! I am beyond the moon today to be guest blogging on Sweet Things By Fi. I am Jess and the editor and creator of Destination Inspirations . A destination wedding blog where I aim to inspire weddings around the world.

I have had the pleasure of featuring Fiona’s amazing delectable cakes and treats. The kinds of cakes and treats that make you head over heels. I believe that you could design an entire destination wedding around Fiona’s creations. They are both sweet, beautiful and a photographers dream to photograph.

Today my inspiration came from Spain where Fiona creates the many wonderful cakes and treats that perfectly compliment the end of a wedding meal. I was lucky enough to spend my honeymoon in Marbella this past May. On a hot afternoon under the golden Spanish sun my husband and I sat drinking refreshing sangria. Under the orange tree groves we sat having a picnic and in the distance, we were lucky enough to see a wedding. Not just any wedding, an all-white wedding. I was in my seventh heaven.

So feast your eyes on this wonderful Spanish destination wedding inspiration. All images are by one of my favorite photographers of all time, Jose Villa with a combined inspiration by the many beautiful cakes made by Fiona.

At Sweet Things we firmly believe that at times, less is definitely more.  We were recently commissioned to design a cake that replicated the couples invitation.  Using the design of their invitation and their colour pallete of ivory and whites we created the below cake.

We believe that the design speaks for itself, simple yet a classic elegant design.  The flavours were Traditional Fruit Cake, Raspberry Ripple and Carrot.

Wedding Spain Gibraltar

I know that I have said it time and time again, but I love a creative challenge.  Although this cake has already been featured on the blog, but having recently received beautiful images from Jeremy Standley I thought that I would share the design process behind the cake.

When meeting the bride and groom and discussing their likes and dislikes, it became quite clear from the beginning that we both love the same styles of art, basic modern sketches with vintage feel.  The bride showed me her invitation, and immediately I fell in love with it.  When I suggested that this be the theme of her cake, she was amazed as both her and the groom didn't believe that this could be translated onto cake.

At Sweet Things by Fi, we rarely use edible transfer images and decided that this picture should be handpainted onto the cake.  This cake is definitely one of the highlights of the year!

And now, enjoy these fabulous images from Jeremy, I love the image that was captured of the bride looking at the cake for the first time!

We recently received these glorious images from Andreas Holm and as always we are in love with his images.  This wedding cake was designed for a bride that loved simplicity, combining this with her midsummer beach theme we created the following wedding cake.

We love the photos and the result of the cake, simple but very chic.  Thank you Lauren for trusting me to design your cake!

Wedding cake Spain/Gibraltar

I feel tremendously fortunate to be able to do a job that I love.   Not only do I get to be a part of a special day, whether that be a wedding, anniversary or some other celebration, but I get to create a part of that day that is captured forever.

When we receive testimonials, it really makes all the hard work worth it.   Today we received this testimonial that I thought I would share with you.

"We truly loved working with you, and you were by far one of our favorite people to work with when we were planning our big day.

When we met you last April, you were so kind and considerate and really listened to everything we liked and disliked.   As a result, you delivered beyond our expectations.

The wedding cake was fabulous.     The flavors were amazing and I'm so glad we decided to do an assortment...lemon, orange blossom, and lime and coconut.

We both just wanted to let you know that we appreciated everything you did for us.   You made something as simple as a dessert a special part of our wedding day and absolutely memorable.       You truly have a gift for making desserts with your creative, adventurous style and baking skills.   Thank you so much for all your hard work.   It was wonderful meeting you, and I wish you all the best!"

I cannot express my gratitude to this bride for her kind comments, and wish her and her husband every success in their married life.

This wedding was stunning.  The venue surrounded by the Andalucian hills was absolutely breathtaking.    The bride wore Jenny Packham wedding gown, head piece and cuff.  This was the inspiration for the design of the wedding cake.  Flavours were Zesty Lemon and Traditional Fruit Cake.  Anna Gazda , a wedding photographer in Spain took these beautiful images that we are excited to share!

Guest Post

Hello Sweet Things... by Fi readers! My name is Greta and I run Northwoods Wedding Company which is in Wisconsin, USA. I am a part time wedding planner full time wedding blogger.

Today I want to share a few inspiration boards with you! I have a fun segment on my blog called "design a wedding" where readers have the chance to create a wedding inspiration board in return for a discount on a custom piece of jewellry from my store .  It's an easy way to interact with my readers and get them involved. Plus, I love seeing all the inspiring ideas that they have

Inspiration can come from anywhere for a wedding, and since Fiona designs wedding cakes, I thought I would create two boards for you based around beautiful cakes that Fiona has created

For this first inspiration board, I created a simple, vintage-inspired, pink wedding. Each item selected for this inspiration board was based on the beautiful pink cake by Fiona. I love the vintage silhouettes on the cake and chose that as my jumping off point for this board.

Fiona's brooch cake is so stunning, isn't it? Brooch's are an amazing vintage wedding trend right now! I based this inspiration board off of that cake topper. It reminded me of old hollywood, so I did a red carpet glamour theme!

Hope you enjoyed these inspiration boards! Feel free to stop by my blog or website and say hello! Look forward to connecting with you! Thanks for having me!

Whilst we specialist in creating wedding cakes, we love orders for novelty cakes also.  Below are a few that we recently did.

Chef cake

Designed for an 18 year old apprentice chef,  everything was edible, from the tea towels to the mini knife!

Sushi Cake

This cake was designed for a Japanese Themed Party.  The cake included, cherry blossoms, bamboo and sushi.  The soy sauce was made with vanilla sugar syrup allowing the 'sushi' to be picked up and dunked into the sauce!  the sushi was made from rice krispie treats, marhmallows and white chocolate, with toasted coconut as rice.  The cake was decadent chocolate with vanilla frosting.

Everything was edible from the chopsticks, to the soy sauce bowl!

Wedding Cake Spain, Gibraltar

This cake was inspired by the beading on the brides wedding dress.  We replicated this with sugar pearls and fondant blossoms.  The cake was adorned with a stunning pale pink and cream lustres sugar rose and we were thrilled with the romantic result.

Wedding Cake Spain, Gibraltar

The wedding cake was the cake with 'two faces'.  The cake was the one thing that the groom was able to help in designing.  In our design session, the groom wanted to implement the couples travel experiences of South America.  However, the bride wanted something traditional and romantic for the wedding photographs.  So we decided to create two different sides to the cake.  The front of the cake had four rows of fondant pearls and the back of the cake told the story of the couple's South American adventure.  Their adventure included, a donkey that carried their luggage, sand-dune boarding, rock climbing, and a native bird called a blue-footed boobie (it really is a bird!).

Wedding Cake Spain, Gibraltar

We were commissioned to create this beautiful, vibrant wedding cake.  The cake has three flavours Zesty Lemon, Decadent Chocolate and Orange Blossom.  We create and handpainted these fuschia starburst lillies and hand moulded each individual cream rose.  The wedding was organised by Silvia who decorated Don Carlos beautifully.

We were thrilled when we received this thank you letter.

"I just wanted to drop you a line to tell you how pleased we were with the cake. It was beautiful-you did a fantastic job! The detail in the flowers was superb. Just what I had in mind. All my guests also commented on how fabulous it was and it tasted delicious too.

...Please feel free to pass on my details to future clients as I am happy to recommend you to anyone."

We can't wait to see the photos from the bride soon.  In the meantime, here are some that we took.

Blossom Cupcakes, Marbella Gibraltar Spain

We are very excited to give you a preview of our new Blossom Range.  These accent cupcakes are perfect for a gift or as part of your celebration cupcake tower.

Brooch Bouquets and Cake Toppers

Modern brides are always looking for something in trend to incorporate into their wedding cakes.  Over the past few years brooch bouquets have become increasingly popular.  We decided that we would incorporate this trend into our new range of wedding cakes by creating brooch cake toppers.  These are designed to be incorporated into the colour and style of each individual bride and are a lasting keepsake for the bride that wants something a little different.  We are veery happy to announce that these will be available for International delivery.  Please email brooches@sweetthingsbyfi.com for further details.

Wedding Cake, Spain Gibraltar

We were so excited to be commissioned to design such a fun wedding cake.   When meeting with the bride and groom, they expressed how important it was to them to have their children on the wedding cake.   Between them they have 6 children, therefore they wanted the cake to be a platform to unite their family as one big family!   We compiled a list of hobbies that each child had and incorporated this into the cake.   Then, using pictures sent to us, we  recreated the whole family out of sugar and modeling chocolate!   To ensure that the cake had elegant and classic tones to it, piped onto the fondant were lace details.

The flavour of the cake were raspberry ripple, and we were later told by Heather that each of the children took delight in eating themselves (their sugar mini-me's)!!     The venue was beautiful, and was immaculately decorated by Laura and her team, and we are looking forward to seeing the professional photos to share more details with you.

But for now... I take the pleasure to introduce you to:

Joseph - a keen golfer
Leah - a footballer in her local football (soccer) team
Emily - a goalkeeper in her local football (soccer)   team
Charlotte - a lover of horses and horse riding
Marcus - a rugby player in his local team
Annie - an budding artist

See if you can spot them!

Wedding Spain

We love everything that exudes style.     Jeremy Standley does just that!   The images that he creates and his style of documenting a wedding are truly unique.   He effortlessly captures the pure essence of the wedding day, and we always are excited to see the images that he creates.   Below are images from a recent wedding held at Finca La Concepcion, which was organised by Heather .   This venue is a favourite for many wedding professionals on the Costa, and never fails to impress.   The cake was created for a couple which I gelled with right from the start.   I am so thankful that they trusted me to provide them with their perfect cake.

As mentioned in a previous post, this bride and groom wanted something 'funky'.   Their wedding colours were fuschia pink and orange, however, to obtain a romantic feel for the cake we used peaches and pale ice pink.   The flavours that they chose were perfect for the summer and included fresh zesty lemon cake and raspberry ripple cake.   This cake is definitely in our top 10 for 2011!

Hi Fi
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for our beautiful shell and starfish wedding cake, it was beautiful! All the flavours were amazing and I felt like crying when it came to cut the cake ...

Wedding Cake, Spain, Gibraltar

Novelty Wedding Cake

This bride and groom were such a fun couple to design a cake for.  The bride asked us to create sugar wedding cake toppers, her exact words were, 'our wedding day is the only chance that we will cake to stand on a cake!', so thats what we did.  The mini bride was wearing a replica of the brides wedding dress.  The mini groom stood proud, holding his camera as the groom is actually a wedding photographer.   The flavours of the cake were raspberry ripple and a special request of Ben & Jerrys Phish Food Icecream! We love the photo that they recently sent us.

Ivory Lace Wedding Cake, Spain, Gibraltar

Ivory Lace Cup(cake) Wedding

This wedding was beautiful.  Organised by Heather and decorated by Laura, the results were wonderful to be a part of.  The cake was decadent chocolate and the cupcakes were amaretto and orange blossom, thus giving guests some options to choose from.  We used a piping technique to replicate the lace on the brides wedding dress and adorned the cake with fresh ivory roses which complete this elegant look.

Below are some of the photos that we took.

We love the photos recently sent to us by the bride and cannot wait to receive some of the professional images from Talia Giraudo soon!

Peacock Wedding Cake, Spain, Gibraltar

Peacocks & Bull Dogs

This was definitely one of the most exciting weddings, a peacock themed wedding held in Finca La Concepion.  The wedding was organised to perfection by Heather Sadtler at Fiesta Sol and magically decorated by Laura Charles and her team at Reviva Weddings, who also provide a fab candy bar.

We love these images that Jeremy Standley has taken of this wedding.

The peacock feathers on the wedding cake were hand piped and painted in peacock feathers to keep in line with the wedding stationery.  Using fresh green and purple orchids and hydrangas we created a very dramatic result.  The flavours were a perfect combination of coconut & lime, orange blossom, and lemon and lemon curd.

The bride also requested a surprise grooms cake.  After consultation we decided to create their bulldog, Bella, who unfortunately could not attend.  The cake was dulce de leche.

Starfish & Pearl wedding cake

Starfish and Pearls

During the design consultation the bride and groom decided that they wanted a seaside beach theme for their wedding cake.  So, we decorated the cake with sugar starfish, seahorses and handmoulded shells.  Instead of having a floral topper, we replicated the pendant worn by the bride.  This was a sugar oyster and pearl.  The results were fantastic.  So much so, we have had several requests for similar styles of cake.  As each of our cakes are bespoke, we are excited to design individual cakes to fit into the colour theme and styles of our other brides!

The wedding reception was held in La Cabane, Los Monteros, Marbella.  The wedding was organised and decorated by the Reviva Weddings team .  We love doing weddings with Reviva, as we always know that they venue will be decorated to such a high and beautiful standard. This wedding was no exception.  Peonies and silver starfish decorated the tables and floating candles added to the decor.  The wedding cake, fitted in perfectly. We are, as usual, very excited to see Jeremy's photos and will post these as soon as we receive them!  But for now, here is a sneak preview.

Vintage Wedding Shoot

These images were recently sent to us by Mireia Garcia from a recent vintage inspired wedding shoot, where we provided a wedding cake for the set.  We just love these beautiful, romantic images!

Enjoy

\White Vintage Wedding Cake

Although the colour theme of this wedding was ivory and coral, the bride requested a traditional white wedding cake.  Each tier was decorated differently, yet when placed together, the design worked perfectly.  The design was inspired by the brides wedding dressby  incorporating the blossoms on her dress onto the cake. The flavours of the cake were decadent chocolate, carrot and lemon.  We very pleased to hear from Reviva Weddings , who organised and decorated the wedding, that the bride and groom was thrilled with the finished cake.

Lace Wedding Cake

We love lace and all things vintage, so when we were comissioned to design a wedding cake for a vintage style wedding, we jumped at the chance!  Fresh peony posy was designed to sit on the cake and the result speaks for itself!  The flavours were a perfect combination of raspberry ripple and lemon & lemon curd.

Geometric Wedding Cake, Spain, Gibraltar

Geometric Wedding Cake

The wedding cake was designed for a bride and groom who asked for something 'funky'.  They loved vibrant colours and interesting shapes and wanted this to be translated into a cake.  As wedding colours were orange and fushia pink, during our design consultation we decided to tone this down onto the cake as use peach and ice pink.  The result was wonderful.  We are very excited to see Jeremy's photos of this fantastic wedding, but here are a few of ours.

This vintage style wedding cake, was beautiful.  We loved that the bride was happy to experiment with different shapes on the cake, a style which is very on trend.

The fantasy peonies and blossoms were created from sugar.

Better still we love the photo recently sent to us of the bride and groom cutting the cake!

Wedding Cake Spain & Gibraltar

Some brides opt for a one tier cake.  At Sweet things by Fi, we ensure that every cake no matter how big or small has a wow factor.

This cake was Raspberry Ripple with White Chocolate ganache, delish!

The brides colours were pink and orange, so each flower was a variation of these shades, very vintage and very pretty.

I cant wait for more photos!

Grooms Cake, Marbella, Spain

When I was asked to make a Grooms cake for a Villa wedding I couldn't wait to get started on the design.  Especially since the design was a slight side step from the romantic wedding cakes usually created at Sweet Things by Fi.

Traditionally a Grooms cake was sliced and given to unmarried female guests who were to place the slice under their pillows so that they too would marry the man of their dreams!  Nowadays, the Grooms cake is design is based around the interests, hobbies and favourite pastimes of the Groom.

The Groom that this cake was made for was an avid baseball fan, a New York Yankees supporter, and the cake reflected just that!  The cake was hidden away as it was a surprise for the Groom  so we didnt get photos of the cake set out on location, which was beautifully decorated by Reviva Weddings .

Below are some pictures of the Chocolate Oreo cake, fully decorated, everything was edible, yes, even the baseball...

We can't wait for some more photos soon.

Cupcakes Spain, Pina Colada

Sweet things by fi is now offering a new flavour... pina colada cupcakes! Totally a cupcake for adults only, very boozy and very tasty!!  In my opinion a winner for this summer, it puts a smile on anyones face!

Wedding Cakes, Spain - Gulten Free

We were asked whether we provide Gulten free cupcakes or cakes.  The answer is... of course!!

Our cupcakes and cake range are very tasty, moist and perfect for any occasion from Marbella to Gibraltar and even further afield.

The Gluten free Sweet Things menu is the same as what is found on the main website www.sweetthingsbyfi.com.

Enjoy

Wedding Cake, Tarifa, Spain

This wedding cake, was such fun to make, from the design process right to making the purple sugar flowers.  The bride had asked for a wedding cake, that was fun, and I think that this would bring a smile to anyones face!

The wedding cake was delivered to Tres Mares, Tarifa, Spain, a trendy location with very beautiful views over the white sands of Tarifa.

Whoopie Pie - the new trend??

2009-2010 has brought a new trend.  The whoopie pie.

What is it...although it looks like the french macaroon, its not! These are an american pastry, originally cooked by the Amish community, they are two discs of cake, sandwiched together with buttercream.  Trust me, these taste great!!

The UK seems to be following their American neighbours, and these are now bang on trend.

According to the Daily Telegraph ,' The first mainstream shop to sell them was Harrods, which introduced the treats at the end of last year. They are proving so popular that the department store has had to hire extra staff to meet demand...Whoopie pies have been an unprecedented hit since launching at Harrods and are now on track to be as big as cupcakes. '

I cannot wait to make these for a very trendy, modern bride on the Costa Del Sol.

Wedding Cake- Villa Padierna, Spain

I loved doing this wedding cake, pure elegance and luxury, perfect for the ballroom setting at Villa Padierna.

We were delighted to be featured in the wedding magazine, Confeti .  This is the first dedicated wedding magazine for Spain and Gibraltar.  It is excellently put together, and a fantastic wedding source.

Childhood Obsession

Sometimes, you wonder when your obsession with your passion began.  I always thought that my obsession for weddings, design, cakes, fashion etc stemed from my late teens, when I wanted to follow my mother's path in bridalwear and the tailoring industry.  However, I was reminded today of when I was 11 years old, and I decided to design my own wedding cake.  Slightly too obsessive you might think!  Unfortunately I don't have the sketches anymore, so I can only imagine what it looked like!!

Wedding Cake, Spain

When a client asked for a cake to be white on white, I was delighted with the results.  Simple, but very classic, a perfect anniversary cake.  Happy anniversary! Fi x

THANK YOU

A massive thank you to Jeremy Standley for his amazing photography skills.

Also, thank you to Laura & Lorraine  for providing some of the flowers shown on the cakes.

Thank you, Fi.

Sex and The City - Wedding Cake

Were you wondering who created this amazing wedding cake...

According to AisleDash, it was executed by Swarovski and celebrity wedding cake baker, Ron Ben-Israel. The Swarovski crystals are chandelier components and are dripping off the cake, which is sitting on a Lucite stand

What a wow factor!!!

Wedding Cake, Spain, Finca La Concepcion

Attached are photos of a wedding cake recently delivered to Finca La Concepcion.  The venue itself was very breathtaking, and the decorations were very elegantly put together by Reviva Weddings.

The bride wanted simplicity, along with a cake that was classic yet still contemporary—a style that would not go out of fashion in a couple of years time.

The cake was English fruit cake, chocolate, vanilla bean, and strawberry—perfect combinations to suit all guests.

Gerbera

My intention with this blog is to put some of my favourite cakes of the year on my site.  This has to be one of them!

Baby Shower, Spain

Whilst I love all things romantic, its a treat to do something different... and a little bit of fun!

Chocolate cake with chocolate ganache... AND an edible bear and rattle!

*** Update ***

Congratulations Linda, on your baby boy.

Grey, White, and Pink

I just love when a bride has an unusual idea, or wants something just that little bit different, so when I was asked to provide cupcakes for a bride with the colour scheme of grey, white, and pinkI couldnt wait to do it!

Here are the results... very modern, and very contemporary!

Hotter Pink

I can't wait to create this wedding cake inspired by the board below.  It will be very striking, bright, and (best of all) PINK!

I will upload photos soon!

Apple Green and White

I love when brides are into their wedding design, especially when they use modern and fresh colours.  recently a bride forwarded these inspiration boards.  As soon as I saw them, I loved the images.  They are two very different colours, however they are perfect for a summer wedding!

Once I have the photos of the cake I will blog these.

2010 Vintage

For the vintage designs, I have incorporated various images gathered from the web.

Black & Cream

The black and white anemones are very strong, striking images, something that I want to translate into a cake deserving of a bride with a strong confident personality.

Cath Kidston

Cath Kidston's use of colours are astounding.   The ability to use pastel and primary colours is something that I want to utilize.  2010, is continuing with vintage, shabby-chic styles—something which is becoming a timeless taste

Pinks

Peonies are one of my favourite flowers.   They are beautiful in any medium, whether it be fabric, fresh, or sugar.   Along with pearls, these create a pure feminine delicate touch.   Perfect for a vintage inspired wedding.

Cream & Gold

I love the colour combo of cream and gold. You can never go wrong with these colour choices!   When I found this picture, I instantly knew that I wanted to incorporate some sort of ruffle design into a cake!
